THOUGHTS ON THE WORLD OF WORK

Get a job (or staff member) for Christmas!

It feels like Christmas has been coming for a while. As soon as the vampire and zombie suits were put back in the cupboard, the Christmas ads were running on the TV and my family were finalising their Christmas shopping.

Grafton Street, Dublin, switched on their lights on Thursday 14th November and the past weekend has already delivered office Christmas parties. Radio DJs were desperate to dust down ‘Fairy Tale of New York’ before the end of November, whilst the official stamp of Christmas for every Irish person - the Late Late Toy Show - was broadcast on Saturday 30th November.  What’s going to be left to do in December? Apart from eating and drinking…..

How about getting a job?

And I’m not talking about a Christmas job, you’re way too late for that!

There is a common misconception that companies don’t hire in December, that they leave it to the New Year. Equally, there is a belief that companies don’t hire in the summer, yet July and August were two of our busiest months. A lot of companies are still operating with a fraction of the staff they had five years ago. However, we’ve seen a definite return to confidence for businesses we deal with, wanting to bring in new staff as quick as possible. We just had a record month for interviews.

It’s not just Santa who’s busy in December. It’s year-end for a lot of companies and that means huge pressure on the finance teams. There is always a big demand for temporary finance and administration staff at this time of year to cover the added workload. While the FDs and their teams wish they could magic all their work into one day, it’s great news for temporary workers needing that much needed extra few euros in their pocket. December is also a time when the last of the allocated holidays are taken by staff so temporary cover is essential.

Sometimes, it can take up to three months to actually go through the process of getting a job and that’s if you’re lucky enough to get your CV noticed. This is where an expert recruitment consultant is valuable, they will be able to give you an idea of the current jobs market and an estimate of how long it will take for you to get your new job, as well as getting suitable CVs noticed.

Equally, if you’re thinking of hiring, don’t wait until 2014 rings in. It will be February or March before you actually hire someone and that’s the busiest time of the year, meaning you’ll have more competition for the best candidates.  Get interviewing now and you’ll probably beat the January rush of recruitment – if you can get people offered before Christmas, you’ll be looking at a mid-January start, the perfect way to start the New Year with some new skills and energy to add to your business.

So if you’re thinking of hiring or changing jobs, don’t wait till January, add it to your Christmas to-do list. It might be the best thing you do this festive season!  Visit www.hays.ie to view jobs we are hiring for or call us on 01 897 2481
